Rain falling in the night makes music in the soft murmur of raindrops falling on earth punctuated by the clear notes of water against metal striking like a percussionist playing a triangle's one note in perfect timing to the rhythm of an orchestra in the cars rushing past with the deep hum of their motors and the whoosh of their tires on the wet pavement like a full section of strings, from violin to bass and in the far distance deep woodwinds calling out a train's passing from pianissimo a gradual crescendo and then an equal gradual diminuendo into silence leaving only the wakeful night in the deep stillness

Sometimes I find joy in the strangest of places-- Sitting in a car with the music blaring In the middle of rush hour traffic-- Walking up the steps of a college library And seeing the face of an old friend-- Looking out the window of an airplane At a cloudscape miles above ground-- Leaving an air-conditioned room And feeling the blast of summer heat-- Standing under gray skies in the rain And smelling the fresh scent of earth-- Drinking my coffee black, without sugar, Because it reminds me of you-- And at those times I find myself, a stranger in a strange land, Smiling like a fool at something no one else can see.
